MELAKA, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Incumbent Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem is banking on his track record over the past five years to retain the seat in the 16th Melaka state election.

Ready for a straight fight, he said he would make full use of the 14-day campaign period to highlight the state government's achievements.

"The time has come for the people to assess what has been achieved and delivered over the past five years under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh," he told reporters after the nomination process at the Duyong Japerun Complex Hall here today.

Mohd Noor Helmy, 45, acknowledged that he faced a tough challenge from Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Poo Long Suan, who brings considerable experience as a former Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council member.

However, he welcomed the contest, describing it as healthy competition that would give both candidates an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to serving the people.

"He will certainly pose a formidable challenge in what I believe will be a healthy contest in this election. Most importantly, the campaign machinery is fully prepared, and we will campaign in a healthy and mature manner," he said.

Polling day is set for Nov 14, while early voting will take place on Nov 10.
