MELAKA, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Political parties planning to install flags or campaign materials within the Historic Melaka City Council (MBMB) area for the 16th State Election are reminded to obtain an installation permit.
Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said political parties must pay a RM5,000 deposit for campaign materials, a RM2,000 advertisement permit fee, and a RM50 processing fee.
He said the charges ensure all political parties comply with rules and conditions set by MBMB and the Election Commission (EC) for installing flags, advertisements, and campaign materials.
"Among the conditions stipulated is that no campaign materials should be installed at road junctions to avoid obstructing drivers' view and endangering road users' safety.
"The installation of flags is strictly regulated to suitable locations, while prohibited areas include government premises and government-owned assets such as bus stops, community halls, traffic lights, and signboards," he said here today.
He spoke to reporters after the MBMB Media and Community Appreciation Ceremony 2026, which MBMB secretary Muhammad Firdaus Shariff also attended.
Shadan said MBMB enforcement officers will remove flags or campaign materials installed without complying with conditions or regulations and may issue compounds.
"Enforcement officers will conduct regular monitoring around the MBMB administrative area to ensure there is no breach of the established conditions or regulations," he said.
He said all flags and campaign materials must be removed within 14 days after polling day.
He added that failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of the deposit paid to MBMB.
The EC has set Nov 14 as polling day for the Melaka election, with nomination day on Oct 31 and early voting on Nov 10.
